About the Calculator
What it is
Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator is a simple, free browser tool built to help stitchers figure out how much fabric they need for a project — without the guesswork, the spreadsheets, or the math.
Enter your pattern's stitch count, choose your fabric count, select whether you're stitching over 1 or over 2, and set your fabric allowance. The calculator shows you your stitched design size and the recommended fabric cut size instantly, in both inches and centimeters.
Who it's for
This tool is built for everyone from complete beginners to experienced stitchers. If you're just starting out with 14-count Aida, it's beginner-friendly by design. If you're working on 32-count linen over 2, it handles that too.
- Works for Aida, evenweave, linen, Jobelan, and any counted fabric
- Supports stitching over 1 and over 2
- Shows stitched design size and fabric cut size separately
- Results in both inches and centimeters
- Beginner-friendly labels and plain-English explanations
- Mobile-friendly — works on phones, tablets, and desktops
- No account, no sign-up, no saved data
How it works
The calculator uses the standard cross stitch fabric count formula. For Aida stitched over 1, the stitches per inch equal the fabric count directly. For evenweave stitched over 2, each stitch spans two threads, so the effective stitches per inch is the fabric count divided by 2.
Your fabric cut size is the design size plus the fabric allowance added to each side. All calculations run in your browser — nothing is sent to a server.
Why we built it
Calculating fabric size is one of the first things every new stitcher has to figure out, and it's surprisingly easy to get wrong. We wanted a tool that gives a clear, trustworthy answer quickly — with enough context that beginners understand what the result means and why.
